On Monday, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mykola Tomenko visited children´s sports school "Sloviany" in the village of Drabiv in Cherkasy region. This children´s sports school is famous for its pupils many-time winners of the international sports competitions. Among the graduates of the school are the champions of the world and Europe, and winners of the all-Ukrainian tournaments in judo and unarmed self-defence.
Visiting the educational establishment, M.Tomenko stated that sports schools in general and "Sloviany" school in particular had been underfunded. Moreover, now that the school belongs to the district department of education, its further full-scale functioning is open to question.
Therefore, M.Tomenko together with deputy of Cherkasy regional council Volodymyr Hres within the program "It is Cool to be Healthy and Sporty" of "Ridna Kraina" Fund presented the uniform and equipment for the sports games, and sports equipment to the hall of power athletics and fitness.
M.Tomenko regretted that "despite declared support of physical culture and sports, public sports establishments in Ukraine are underfunded." "It is a crime that central and local authorities left sports clubs and children´s schools to the mercy of fate, shouldering the responsibility on the coaches and leaders who have to survive on their own," he stressed.
